"A Pharaoh in
Poseidon's Realm" Due to earthquakes, much of the port city of Alexandria now is submerged in the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Recent excavations in the bay of Alexandria were expected to yield mostly Greek artifacts, as the city was founded by Alexander the Great in the 3rd century BC. To the surprise of many, a wealth of Egyptian treasures were found, many predating the Greek period by a thousand years. Among these were several broken obelisks and 27 four to five ton sphinxes. This sphinx is shown as it may have appeared shortly after being submerged. The sea life seen here including the dolphin, often seen in Greek art, are indigenous to the area. |
